Food and Agricultural Organization of United Nations along with the World Health organization celebrates “World Food Day” on October 16 of each year to commemorate the founding of the Organization in 1945. Events are organized in more than 130 countries around the world, making it one of the most important days celebrated of the calendar of the United Nations. Together with the global ceremony at FAO Headquarters in Rome, these events promote awareness and global action in favour of those who suffer from hunger and about the need to guarantee food security and nutritious diets for all.

The event was held at the Plenary Hall of the organization building where Letizia, the FAO Goodwill Ambassadors for Nutrition, took her seat and the Director of FAO inaugurated the event.

Speaking at the event Queen said, “nutrition has never been so important before, let’s take advantage of the momentum of FAO, also of WHO, with the United Nations Decade on Nutrition, so that the private sector becomes more committed. Comprehensive education for health is part of the curricula in schools so that the consumer reinforces his role and knows what he buys and what he ingests. we have the opportunity to improve the lives of millions of people.”

In the afternoon, Ms Letizia attended the inauguration of the “World Food Day” exhibition at FAO headquarters. Next, together with the Heads of State, ministers and high-level representatives of the private sector and civil society participated in the panel “Involving people in solutions for the planet”, about the challenges and solutions of Zero Hunger. The speakers discussed climate change, conflicts, migration, poverty and the double burden of hunger and obesity, as well as ways to adapt or overcome these challenges through nutrition education, improved food systems, social protection, agro-ecology, preservation of biodiversity, empowerment of family farmers and others.

Later in the day, Queen visited Royal Academy of Spain in Rome that promotes the artistic and humanistic formation of creators, restorers and researchers, with the aim of achieving a greater Spanish cultural presence in Italy and a better understanding of the cultures of both countries.
