The meeting had an eminently social focus how it dealt with issues such as the capabilities of the UME to care for the victims in large emergencies, the search and rescue of people with different disabilities, the protection of Cultural Interest Assets in catastrophes and their specialized training to fulfil these missions.

Next, the Queen was able to learn details of the mission that the UME carried out in Mexico, after the earthquake that the country suffered last September, and read the letters of thanks written by Mexican schoolchildren. Letizia visited the headquarters of the Red Cross in Mexico last November where they positively valued the participation of the EMU after the earthquake.

The tour of the facilities of the UME in the Air Base of Torrejón de Ardoz began in the Military Emergency School, the specialized training centre of the Unit, where she unveiled a commemorative plaque and visited the students in one of its classrooms.

Then she attended a search and rescue exercise for people trapped in rubble in a polluted environment. This requires the use of the specific personal protection equipment and the use of technical means such as seismic sensors, tele-cameras, and radars capable of detecting a person’s breathing through the walls and determining their exact location.
