Queen Letizia of Spain chaired the meeting of the Board of Trustees of the Residence of Students, which has approved the Report of activities for 2019 and the Project for 2021 in Madrid. The meeting is usually held in the month of June but this year it was postponed due to the COVID- 19. The Student Residence, who’s Honorary Presidency is held by the King, was founded in 1910 by the Board for the Extension of Scientific Studies and Research. Currently, it has the status of a private foundation, which was created on December 14, 1989, by the Higher Council for Scientific Research (CSIC).

The meeting focused on the activities held in 2019, the year in which the 80th anniversary of the Spanish exile was celebrated, with special mention to those dedicated to “Alberto Jiménez Fraud and institutionalism in the exile “, with the seminar “The Spanish intellectuals from Krause to the British postwar period”, held at the University of Cambridge. In the year 2019, Several activities were dedicated to the centenary of the arrival of Federico García Lorca to the Residence, the centenary of the Bauhaus and, among other intellectual history activities, a tribute was held to the philosopher Javier Muguerza, who died in April.

The activity of the Residence in 2021 will continue to be framed within the project Culture and education for a sustainable future, which began, again in collaboration with the ILE, in 2020 and whose actions span until 2026, focused on highlighting and providing possible solutions to the most important challenges we face today, especially a concern for the future of the planet and the environment, and the transformation of education and the promotion of creativity, in accordance with the sustainable development goals of the 2030 Agenda approved by the United Nations.

The Residence will continue working next year to reaffirm its digital commitment and deepen its internationalization, with European exchange projects such as similar spirits (Kindred Spirits) or its work as a member of the Network of European Heritage Sites
