On Tuesday, The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge made a joint video call to the nursing students of Ulster University in Northern Ireland. They talked to the student nurses about their experience and life on the frontline during the COVID-19 pandemic. Prince William and Duchess Catherine thanked the student nurses for their incredible work supporting the frontline workforce.

“It is very difficult for you guys to go straight into a pandemic, I would imagine. That’s really baptism by fire.” – The Duke of Cambridge

For nursing students, studying and undertaking placements during the pandemic has been a challenge like no other while taking part in practical clinical sessions at the university with their lecturers. Both cohorts undertook placements during the first wave of the pandemic, with many extending their placements to support the frontline workforce.

Ranked in the top 50 nursing schools in the world, Ulster University’s School of Nursing has approximately 1600 students registered. At the start of the pandemic in March 2020, students were asked to join the front line.  Student placements were adapted to meet the needs and demands of the health service, with the majority of students being placed in COVID-19 areas in both hospital and community settings.

“Nursing is one of the most trusted professions in the country. You could not have chosen a better career choice. It’s needed now more than ever.” – The Duchess of Cambridge

During the call, the students discussed their appreciation for the invaluable experiences they have gained working on the frontline and the support they received from Ulster University during this challenging period. Third-year nursing student Elizabeth Semerdzhieva told the couple, “It’s scary. Although it was frightening at the start, you really want to go out more now. You can’t wait to get out in practice and feel like you are helping. That’s what we were born to do.”
