Today, the Spanish Royal Family presided over the launching ceremony of Submarine S-81 “Isaac Peral”, at the Navantia shipyard in Cartagena, the first of a series of four submarines that will enter service in the Spanish Navy in the coming years, placing Spain in a relevant role within the countries capable of building and designing submarines.

The Family had a virtual tour of the submarine through a presentation showcasing all the design and development features of the Submarine S-81, which has a total length of 80.8 meters, a diameter of 7.3 meters, and an immersion displacement. of around 3,000 tons. And learnt from the staff about its working.

The launching ceremony took place on the dock of the shipyard. Princess of Asturias, Leonor, became the Godmother of the submarine  S-81 “Isaac Peral”. Leonor cut the ribbon with the flag of Spain releasing a bottle of red wine selected. The event concluded with the National Anthem. A plaque was unveiled to mark the big day of the Spanish Navy.

The Royal Family also watched a video marking the centenary of the launching of the first submarine in the facilities of Navantia. The Navy will begin operations with the S-81 “Isaac Peral” between February and March 2023. Later, the S-82 “Narciso Monturiol” will arrive in December 2024; the S-83 “Cosme García”, in October 2026; and the S-84 “Mateo García de los Reyes”, in February 2028. The family also toured the Navantia facilities.
