The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement is the world’s largest voluntary humanitarian organization for 156 years. It is present in 192 countries and is made up of more than 12 million active volunteers. In Spain, there are more than 250,000 volunteers from the Spanish Red Cross, of which more than 68,000 have made possible the Red Cross RESPONDE Plan, with more than 36,000 newly incorporated.

This year’s celebrations are being held under the slogan “From society to society”. The celebration of World Red Cross and Crescent Day takes place during the largest operation in the history of the Spanish Red Cross, the Red Cross RESPONDS Plan against COVID-19, through which it has already been possible to support more of 4 million vulnerable people in our country impacted in one way or another by the pandemic, and more than 700 million people worldwide through the International Movement of the Red Cross and Red Crescent.

The 2021 recognition was, in this case, a unique recognition, the Plaque of Honor of the Spanish Red Cross, which was awarded to the volunteers of the International Movement of the Red Cross and Red Crescent, and which was collected on their behalf by the president of the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent, Francesco Rocca.

Speaking at the event, Letizia said, “all of you who are part of the Red Cross: each of the four million people you have attended in the last year have felt encouraged and hope thanks to your work”.

Remembering her visit to the Red Cross headquarter in May 2020, The Queen said, “What I understood that morning in May 2020 was that the Red Cross responds, accompanies and tends the hand to those who have unimaginable difficulties to maintain a dignified life. For all that, for each day of work, thank you very much.”
