King Felipe and Queen Letizia concluded 2024 with a a visit to Cuenca

King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia of Spain undertook their final public engagement of the year 2024 and visited Cuenca. The visit was part of the programs scheduled to mark the 10th anniversary of King Felipe’s accession to the throne in June this year. The Palace will be releasing King Felipe’s Christmas message on Christmas eve but otherwise the family has retreated for a private Christmas and new Year celebrations.

Princess Leonor and Infanta Sofia are home from their respective schools and will be with their parents until the the first week of 2025. Sofia will be heading back to Wales to complete the second year of IB while Leonor will be heading to conclude the Navy training. In the summer 2025, Sofia will be back home to begin the next chapter of her life after finishing high school, while Leonor will conclude the second year of her military training.

The King and Queen’s last engagement of the year saw them visiting the City Council of Cuenca and inaugurating the new University Hospital of Cuenca, The Royal couple received a very warm welcome from the locals during their visit.

The new university hospital is the largest civil work in the history of the province of Cuenca. With an investment of 200 million euros, this new infrastructure will guarantee the next two generations of survival making the province at the forefront of health care across the country. Pointing facilities, with state-of-the-art technology, both in the field of care (the best magnetic resonance existing in the NHS at the present time; full robotization of the services of Pharmacy and Laboratories, surgical block with a spectacular technological endowment, Radiotherapy Oncology service and Nuclear Medicine), and in areas that are part of the day-to-day hospital and that are absolutely essential for the proper functioning of such a Service center.

Felipe and Letizia toured the hospital and heard about the various facilities that will be available to the patients once the hospital becomes operative. They met with the resident doctors, authorities and board of the hospital.

The second stop of the day was the City Hall of Cuenca which was declared World Heritage City in December 1996 thanks to the conservation of the original urban landscape as a medieval fortress, its civil and religious architecture from the 12th to the 18th centuries, and the fusion of the city with the natural environment in which it is located.

As mentioned this was Felipe and Letizia’s last public engagement of the year. We might see the family out and about enjoying winter festivities in the next week or so but otherwise Felipe and Letizia will be back to royal duties on January 05th 2025 to celebrate the Military Easter – the first official engagement of 2025.
