King Felipe and Queen Letizia of Spain concluded their 3 days long visit to Italy in Naples. The Royal Couple’s last engagement was at the San Carlo Theater where King Felipe was honor with the title of Honorary Doctorate in Social Sciences and Statistics by the University of Naples Frederick II. This is the first time, King Felipe has received the Honorary Degree from any institute.
President Sergio Mattarella accompanied the royal couple to the event. The event was part of the 800th anniversary of the university’s foundation. Many outstanding personalities from the academic, political and social spheres were present for the ceremony. This is the first time the University has awarded the Honorary Doctorate degree to any Head of the state. It also happens to be their 5th honorary degree only in their prestigious history of 800 years.
The PhD program in Social Sciences and Statistics of the University of Naples Frederick II is unique in southern Italy, and is distinguished by its interdisciplinary approach in the study of social transformations in the Mediterranean region.
After the ceremony, The Royal Couple along with the Italian President headed to the Naples airport for the departure ceremony. The Royal couple was given a military send off. The King and the President reviewed the troops and then King Felipe and Queen Letizia bid farewell to their host and headed home.
