King Felipe and Queen Letizia of Spain joined the European Royals and World Leaders to mark the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi concentration and extermination camp. On this day in 1945, Soviet forces liberated the camp, uncovering the horrors of the Holocaust.
About 50 survivors from this camp were also present at the event. The event featured speeches from survivors, emphasizing the importance of remembrance and education to prevent future atrocities. Over 1.1 million people—mostly Jews—were murdered during the Holocaust. When Soviet forces liberated Auschwitz, they found approximately 7,000 surviving prisoners, many of whom were gravely ill and emaciated. The liberators also discovered mountains of personal belongings, including shoes and suitcases, as well as evidence of the atrocities committed, such as gas chambers and crematoria.
Auschwitz-Birkenau has since become a symbol of the Holocaust and the brutality of the Nazi regime. In 2005, the United Nations designated January 27 as International Holocaust Remembrance Day to commemorate the victims and ensure that the world never forgets the horrors of the Holocaust. The site remains a memorial and museum, visited by millions each year as a powerful reminder of the need to combat hatred, racism, and antisemitism.
A new research center aimed at combating extremism has been established in the former house of Auschwitz commandant Rudolf Höss. Named the Auschwitz Center on Hate, Extremism, and Radicalization, it focuses on educating visitors and promoting actions against extremism and antisemitism.
Keeping her outfit sombre and poignant for the event, Queen Letizia chose an all over black ensemble that contains a black blazer and trousers with a black scarf and headband. She was wearing black Unisa boots and carried her Carolina Herrera bag. The outfit was paired with pearl earrings and her coreterno ring.
