King Felipe and Queen Letizia of Spain were shedding tears of joy on Saturday, when they saw their elder daughter, Princess Leonor, embarking on a sea adventure with her batch mates on the student ship Juan Sebastian de Elcano for next 6 months. The Princess of Asturias is currently enrolled in the 3 years long military training. On 8th January Leonor arrived at the Port of Cadiz along with her batch mates to prepare the for the departure.
The 6 months long sailing journey will see the future Queen of Spain traveling through out the Americas before docking back home in July 2025. You can find more about her sea adventure here.
“You are about to sail for your training cruise, the Queen and I want to wish you good sea, good winds, but above all that you take advantage of this stage of your training as sailors, as soldiers and also in your projection in the world as Spaniards. You represent a Navy with a legacy of centuries that you must honor and respect and also represent a 21st-century Navy, the Spanish Navy, which will tour with Elcano seas and oceans again. Always remember that you carry the prestige and image of Spain on your shoulders.”
Many other parents and families joined the Royals at the Port of Cadiz to bid farewell to their children. In a loving tribute, Queen Letizia was wearing a gold headband with butterflies on it. The headband was worn by Leonor’s younger sister, Infanta Sofia, at Princess Leonor’s communion in May 2015. In a way, Letizia brought Sofia with her to bid farewell to Leonor. Both sisters will now meet sometime in June when Leonor will be heading back home from New York during a pit drop before the final docking and Sofia will be back home after completing her IB.
