King Felipe and Queen Letizia of Spain had an away day in Toledo to visit National Paraplegic Hospital. The visit was a special one as it celebrated the 50th anniversary of the special hospital that was launched on October 7, 1974 by the then princes of Spain, Prince Juan Carlos and Princess Sofia.

The King and Queen were given a tour of the hospital that began in the Children’s Rehabilitation Area, where they learned the different rehabilitation techniques carried out with pediatric patients like a pediatric robot, Lokomat, which helps to walk children with spinal injuries. This robotic system is attached to the legs and moves the hips and knees following a clinical running pattern on a rolling tapestry, and has a harness that allows patients to stand and walk.

The visit included the Occupational Therapy Area, where different patients were located and where the design and use of tools designed in the area itself produced with 3D printers were explained.  King Felipe and Queen Letizia next stopped at the experimental Neurophysiology laboratory, where a group of researchers is working on the restoration of neural networks, by studying neural circuits and regulating their training and maintenance.
