It was a usual rainy day, when Kate stepped inside the women’s prison that holds 400 inmates some service life imprisonment to highlight the importance of strong, loving and consistent mother and baby relationships to a child’s development, even in the most challenging of environments.. The Princess met staff and former residents to hear about the support provided including high quality nursery provision, targeted interventions and parenting support for the on-site mothers.

This was Kate Middleton’s fourth official visit to a prison as the patron of the charity. The Princess of Wales met women being supported by the Action for Children charity, which runs mother and baby units in three prisons in the north of England. The initiative also works to address female reoffending rates, which currently stand at 22.3 per cent across England and Wales.Action for Children employs early years practitioners at each facility to ensure babies receive the highest quality care and experience normal activities like walks, shopping trips and bus travel. The practitioners also arrange overnight stays with family members outside the prison, helping to build and maintain important bonds with the children’s wider support network.
