On May 24, 2025, Infanta Sofía of Spain, the younger daughter of King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia, crossed the stage at St Donat’s Castle in Wales, marking the culmination of her two-year odyssey at UWC Atlantic College. Proud parents, King Felipe and Queen Letizia were sitting among the parents watching their daughter receiving the International Baccalaureate (IB) diploma just after two years her elder sister walked through the same steps. Princess Leonor was unable to attend the big day of her younger sister as she is currently at sea continuing her military training with the Spanish Navy.

In February 6, 2023, the Spanish Royal Household announced that Infanta Sofía, then 15 years old, would study at UWC Atlantic College, following in the footsteps of her older sister, Princess Leonor, who graduated from the same institution in May 2023. Sofía underwent a rigorous selection process through the Spanish Committee of the United World Colleges (UWC Spain), which included entry tests required for the IB program.

UWC Atlantic, often dubbed “Hippie Hogwarts” for its progressive ethos, is no ordinary boarding school. Housed in a 12th-century castle, it brings together 360 students from over 90 countries, fostering a community dedicated to peace, sustainability, and leadership. The college’s 122-acre campus, with its historic classrooms and modern facilities, became her proving ground, where students honed multilingual skills and embraced the UWC mission of fostering global understanding.

Arriving in August 2023, Sofía traded the royal spotlight for a shared dormitory, where she lived alongside peers from diverse backgrounds. The images released by the Royal Household—of a casually dressed teenager bidding farewell to her parents outside Zarzuela Palace—captured a relatable moment of transition. At UWC, she immersed herself in the IB’s demanding curriculum, choosing from subjects like Biology, Global Politics, and Visual Arts, while engaging in extracurriculars that ranged from community service to seafront sports.

During her time at the  historic school, Sofia also went through few other milestones – In December 2023, she stepped into the public eye with her first solo engagement, presenting awards at the Royal Collections Museum in Madrid. Dressed in a crisp white suit reminiscent of her mother’s iconic style.

April 2025, as she celebrated her 18th birthday, the Royal Household shared glimpses of her at Zarzuela Palace, marking her transition to adulthood amid her final months at UWC.  Unlike Princess Leonor, who embarked on military training after graduating in 2023, Sofía’s path diverges. With no military obligations, she is poised to pursue higher education, with whispers of applications to universities abroad, possibly in the United States or United Kingdom.
