King Felipe and Queen Letizia of Spain today stepped out to preside over the award of the Madrid Press Association Awards at the Auditorium Caja de Música in Madrid. On Sunday, The Royal Couple was in Vatican city to attend the inauguration of Pope Leo XIV. This week Oman’s Sultan was scheduled to make a state visit to Spain that was postponed until further notice due to the demise of Sultan’s Mother-in-Law.
The Press Association of Madrid awards the APM Awards for Journalism, which are consolidated among the most prestigious in the sector and are usually convened at the end of each year. The first of the awards, the Rodríguez Santamaría Prize (since 2013, the APM Award of Honor), was instituted in 1939. This year marked the 86th edition of the prestigious honour.
The awards are presented in the 4 categories: APM Award for the Young Journalist of the Year, APM Award for the Journalist Specialized in Madrid, APM Award for Best Journalist of the Year 2024 and APM Award of Honor. King Felipe and Queen Letizia accompanied by the Minister of the Presidency, Justice and Relations with the Courts, the Mayor of Madrid and the President of the APM presented the awards to this year’s winners.
Addressing the gathering, King Felipe said, “In times of social networks today, of the incursion of artificial intelligence, in times of extreme discourses and complex environments…, journalism, you journalists – you emerge as essential figures for our coexistence. From responsibility and rigour, you seek at best the exercise of free and independent journalism so that citizens have the keys to understand the world, which is, just night, a strange world. It is not easy to explain the world, to offer the right context, to flee bias, to serve society with rigorous information.”
