Queen Letizia of Spain made a special visit to the Madrid’s permanent Book fair “Closs of Moyano” to mark its centenary in 2025. Letizia is an avid book reader and every year she visits the annual Madrid main book fair in the summer too. We have seen her many times in the shops buying books.
This open-air book fair, located near Retiro Park, has been a cultural landmark since 1925, featuring wooden stalls with books sold daily. During her visit, she met with with booksellers and honorary members of the Soy de la Cuesta civic association. Talking to the locals and book sellers, Letizia joked, “If someone calls me old-fashioned, maybe with reason, but I’m always with the radio and the book“.
After the visit, the President of the Madrid Book Fair Association at Cuesta Moyano and the founder of Soy de la Cuesta gave Letizia several editions treasured by Moyano’s booksellers as well as a gift for the King. For the Princess of Asturias and Infanta Sofia, the booksellers have chosen the limited edition, illustrated in color for the first time by the author, of The Lord of the Rings, by J.R.R. Tolkien; a first edition of La Dama Joven, by Emilia Pardo Bazán, considered at the time as one of the 50 best edited books in Spain, and two first editions of El Mundo is Ansí and Las Noches del Buen Retiro, by Pío Baroja in Dutch binding.
