King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia of Spain visited Brañosera, a small municipality in Palencia, to commemorate the 1,200th anniversary of its Fuero, marking it as Spain’s oldest municipality, founded during the Reconquista. The visit was part of the activities celebrating the 10th anniversary of King Felipe’s proclamation as King. This town of Palentina is considered the first municipality in Spain by its Carta Puebla.
“For this heritage-rich Brañosera visit in June 2025, Queen Letizia struck the perfect balance between modernity and formality. She wore a sleek burgundy blazer and trousers by Bleis Madrid, paired with the Hugo Boss ‘Iyabo2’ top, lending the ensemble a structured yet soft elegance. She accessorized with PdPaola’s Large Sugar Earrings, her symbolic Coreterno ring, a Carolina Herrera Victoria Insignia shoulder bag, and Massimo Dutti heeled loafers — a look that was polished, understated, and entirely appropriate for the setting”.
Brañosera, with a population of about 250, is a small but historically significant town, and the visit drew attention to its cultural heritage. The municipality was established in 824 AD. The visit highlighted the town’s role as Spain’s first municipality and its historical importance during the Reconquista. King Felipe and Queen Letizia received a very warm welcome from the locals and authorities upon their arrival.
The visit began with a tour of the headquarters of the municipality of Brañosera, where in the Plenary Hall, they saw a sample of documents on the occasion of the 1200th Anniversary of the Fuero. King Felipe and Queen Letizia signed the Book of Honour and also received small tokens to remember the visit.
Next the couple headed to a small ceremony held at the central viewpoint of the town during which many locals and authorities were presented with the token of recognition by the King and Queen.
The history of Brañosera traces back to the pre-Roman era, when Iberians and Celts inhabited the Iberian Peninsula, possibly influencing its early name. The Romans later arrived, naming the region Hispania. By the 8th century, much of the peninsula fell under Muslim rule, but northern areas resisted. In 824, within the rugged Palentina Mountain, now part of the Fuentes Carrionas and Fuente Cobre-Montaña Palentina Natural Park, Brañosera was founded. Established by Count Munio Núñez and his wife Argilo through a pioneering Fuero, it became Spain’s oldest municipality, a beacon of Christian settlement during the Reconquista.
