Queen Letizia of Spain opened the new month with a trio of meaningful audiences at the Royal Palace of Zarzuela, meeting with organizations dedicated to addiction recovery, youth empowerment, and respiratory health. With grace and a thoughtful presence, the Spanish Queen once again demonstrated her steadfast engagement with Spain’s most pressing social, educational, and public health issues.
The day began with a deeply important audience: Queen Letizia welcomed representatives from Proyecto Hombre, one of Spain’s most impactful associations working on addiction prevention and rehabilitation. The project, with 28 centers across the country, supports individuals and families affected by drug dependency through comprehensive care, from psychological counseling to social reintegration.
In 2024 alone, over 18,000 individuals received treatment, and 130,000 more took part in prevention programs—reaching schools, families, and workplaces alike.
During the discussion, Queen Letizia was briefed on preparations for the Barcelona Forum on Drugs, scheduled for January 2026. The international summit aims to create a shared roadmap to prevent drug use in childhood and adolescence. Organized with support from the la Caixa Foundation, it will convene over 250 professionals, policymakers, and NGOs from around the world. Letizia’s genuine interest and warm dialogue with the team reaffirmed her role as a compassionate listener and champion for inclusive health and social care.
Later in the day, young scholarship recipients from the BBVA Microfinance Foundation (FMBBVA) were received by Queen Letizia in a relaxed and hopeful audience. Joined by Carlos Torres Vila, President of BBVA, and Javier M. Flores, CEO of the Foundation, the Queen engaged with the youth, asking about their ambitions, worries, and plans for the future.
“With projects like these scholarships, we want to boost their willingness to progress and go further,” said Torres Vila.
Founded in 2007, FMBBVA has disbursed $21 billion in credit to over 6 million low-income entrepreneurs in Latin America, aiming to drive sustainable and inclusive economic growth. The scholarship program is a symbol of intergenerational support and empowerment, and Queen Letizia’s presence underscored the importance of education in breaking systemic barriers.
Queen Letizia’s final audience of the day was with the Spanish Society of Pulmonology and Thoracic Surgery (SEPAR). The group presented Her Majesty with a commemorative book celebrating the 30th anniversary of SEPAR’s Tobacco Area, a field the organization has led since its formation in the 1990s. This commemorative book celebrates 30 years of continuous effort and significant achievements in the prevention, treatment and control of smoking, a field in which SEPAR has been a pioneer since its first actions in the 1960s.
Known for its work in respiratory medicine, education, and advocacy, SEPAR continues to spearhead initiatives addressing smoking cessation, pulmonary disease, and public health. The Queen’s continued engagement with medical and scientific communities highlights her advocacy for evidence-based public health policy and prevention efforts.
