Today the Duchess of Cambridge Catherine arrived in Essex to open the new community-based treatment centre in Wickford, Essex as the patron of Action on Addiction.

Action on Addiction is one of the early patronages of Duchess. The charity offers life-saving treatment to individuals and families at its flagship treatment centre, Clouds House in Wiltshire, and at its community-based treatment centres in Essex and Liverpool. It also offers education to degree level at the Centre for Addiction Treatment Studies and funds and promotes research into effective responses to addiction.

Today Duchess also launched charity’s community-based recovery programme ‘Clouds in the Community’. It is is a Self-Help Addiction Recovery Programme (SHARP) that provides an effective alternative to residential treatment, and enables the charity to provide services for more people in more places.

‘Clouds in the Community’ is the starting point for long-term recovery and abstinence and leads to improvements in participants’ physical and psychological health, self-efficacy, and overall quality of life.

‘Clouds in the Community’ aims to reach more people in more places by helping clients to recover in their own neighbourhoods.

At the centre, The Duchess talked to clients at various stages of their recovery about the benefits of ‘Clouds in the Community’, a non-residential recovery programme that is based at the centre.

Speaking at the opening of the centre, Duchess said, “Huge congratulations. I believe so passionately in community projects, so I wish it all the best for success in the future”.

The impromptu speech was heartwarming as Duchess reflected back on the six-year journey as “the start of my learning” with the charity since taking its patronage and added, “You’re very special to me.”.

Duchess was greeted by an almost 2 years old Myla Clancy with a bouquet of flowers. Duchess asked her “Have you smelt it? Let’s smell. Ah, is that nice? Thank you very much.”

Before leaving for the Palace, Catherine greeted all the well-wishers gathered outside the centre to meet and see her.

The royals walked through the Holmenkollen ski museum and watched a demonstration from some of Norway’s top under-18 ski jumpers.

 

In the jumping tower, former world champion Rune Velta and Skihopper Anniken Mork told the guests what to do to jump skis and how to overcome fear.

The sporty Duchess was in a playful mood and threw a snowball at Prince William that he responded with a smile “It’s too cold for snowballs”.

Later on, The Duke and Duchess and The Crown Prince and Princess join a group of local nursery children taking part in an afternoon ski school session on the slopes organized by the Norwegian Ski Federation.

The Duke and Duchess took part in a number of outdoors activities with children, including roasting sausages on an open fire. They baked a simple bread mixture – called pinnebrod – wrapped around a stick and sausages.

The Duchess was in a mothering mode at slopes. She helped a little girl who slipped on the snow. As Duchess helped her at the same time another girl took a tumble. Catherine exclaimed “Oh no” before checking if she was OK and gave her thumbs up when she got back on her feet.

They also had a chat with some of the ski instructors that deliver sessions throughout the year to keep children active and engaged with the sport as well as visit the adjoining nursery.
