Today Duchess of Cambridge Catherine visited Great Ormond Street Hospital to officially open the new Mittal Children’s Medical Centre. The new centre will help the hospital to provide world-class care to more children and will increase is patient capacity.

Great Ormond Street Hospital has a long connection with The Royal Family; The Queen is currently Patron and has visited a number of times throughout her reign. Diana, Princess of Wales became President in 1989.

Queen Victoria was the first Patron of the hospital, which was founded in 1852, and in 1864 after Queen Victoria had donated toys to the children.

On today’s visit, The Duchess of Cambridge was greeted at GOSH by supporters of the new building project, which will deliver the hospital’s vision of providing modern facilities for its acute inpatients and will see children moved out of old facilities into brand new, modern wards with ensuite bedrooms where parents or carers can stay comfortably overnight by their child’s bedside.

Duchess then paid a visit to the Panther and Bear Ward, to meet some patients and families, to learn more about how the new centre is having a positive impact on patients and their families.

The Duchess joins some children for art activities.

Then Catherine had a chance to meet some of GOSH’s incredible nursing team, whose work enables GOSH to be one of the world-leading children’s hospitals.

It was then time to officially open the new Mittal Children’s Medical Centre.

The centre is named after Mittal family who donated £15 million to the hospital ten years ago for the £321 million medical units for children with problems such as heart and lung conditions.’

Catherine finished the visit with a short speech, to congratulate Great Ormond Street on the incredible work they do.

For today’s visit, Duchess debuted a brand we were long waiting for her to wear. Duchess chose ‘Lena’ Coat from British label Boden.

The pure cotton structured design is embellished with ruffles at the collar, pocket and sleeve and falls just below the knees. Fully lined for comfort, it is completed with a button-down placket with large statement buttons.

The piece is also available in Navy tone and is retailing at $330 on Boden.

Underneath the coat, Catherine wore the same peach dress she wore with her Tara Jarmon coat in 2013 during a visit to EACH when she was expecting George. It is believed to be designed by her independent designer.

After this visit Duchess will undertake her second engagement of the day at Bond Primary School in Mitcham as Patron of Wimbledon, to see the work of the Wimbledon Junior Tennis Initiative.

Today the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge undertook their first joint engagement of the year. They visited Coventry with a daylong itinerary.

 

Upon arrival, hundreds of royal fans were waiting for their arrival. They were given a huge and warm welcome in Coventry.

 

The visit was to congratulate the city on becoming the new UK City of Culture and to open Coventry University’s new Science and Health Building. The couple thanked the Coventry locals who helped put together their programme.

The first stop of the day was the Coventry Cathedral which dates back to the 15th Century. Before going inside the couple met the people waiting for them outside the Cathedral.

The couple chatted with locals and Duchess received flowers and teddy bears.

Then the Duke and Duchess toured the cathedral and see ruins of the original building which was destroyed by Luftwaffe bombs during WWII.

The new Cathedral was completed in 1962 and consecrated that year in the presence of The Queen accompanied by Princess Margaret.

After the tour, the couple met the local community gathered inside the cathedral. And then took part in the Coventry Litany of Reconciliation. The Litany is prayed at noon each weekday in Coventry Cathedral and in the Cathedral ruins on Fridays by those inspired by its story. The prayer hopes to encourage a culture of reconciliation and peace.

They also met staff and volunteers at the Cathedral Rising Café – a social enterprise aimed at providing work and opportunity for those overcoming drug and alcohol addictions.

At the café a selection of beautifully decorated cakes, scones were prepared for the couple with afternoon tea. There Catherine also revealed that she does not like Almond despite the reports that led the volunteers there to place it on the menu.

The next stop was the Coventry University. The couple was there to open the new Science and Health Building of Coventry University.

 

The £59 million facility trains nurses, midwives, paramedics and other health professionals using the latest technology and simulation methods.

William and Catherine met the staff and volunteers. They also met some of the patients at the facility.

The couple was given the tour of the facility and briefed about the facilities provided to patients there.

This facility is the only of its kind in the UK, where students can learn to care for a patient at every stage of their medical experience; from paramedics arriving at their house and their ambulance journey to their stay in the hospital, through to their rehabilitation at home.

The Foundation works with over 2,500 young people each year, living in challenging circumstances and provides services to help them make positive lifestyle choices.

The Royal couple joined a session for young people newly arrived in the UK and saw first-hand the work of the foundation. The charity formed an integral part of Coventry’s successful UK City of Culture 2021 bid.

The engagement was not announced pre-hand by the palace. Duchess made this appearance as the patron of Anna Freud National Centre for Children and Families.

Kensington Palace in a tweet said,” This reflects Duchess’ interest in early intervention in children’s mental health to help young people get support at an early age to prevent problems later on.”

During the conference, Duchess Catherine heard keynote speakers from the field of resilience research and met with young people and staff leading the ground-breaking HeadStart programme which focuses on building mental health and resilience in children and young people across the country.

AFNCCF said that they were “delighted to welcome their Patron to the Conference. HRH is a committed champion of children’s mental health and wellbeing and it is fantastic to have her here“.

At the conference, Duchess stayed till the end and met the attendees. She discussed the mental health issues and the recovery process with the attendees. Young people from all over the country were invited to join a panel discussion.
