The Late Queen’s Greville Chandelier Earrings
Description
Catherine, The Princess of Wales, debuted The Late Queen’s Greville Chandelier Earrings in June 2023 at the Jordan Royal Wedding Banquet.
The Royal Collection Trust describes the earrings as “These earrings were made for Mrs Greville in 1929 and were part of the bequest of jewels she made to Queen Elizabeth in 1942. They were given by King George VI and Queen Elizabeth to Princess Elizabeth as a wedding present in November 1947. Their design incorporates a lexicon of modern diamond cuts, including half-moon, trapeze, square, baguette, baton and emerald. ” The earrings were one of the Late Queen’s favourite pair as she was seen wearing them very often.
Designed by Cartier using Diamond and Platinum, the earrings have gone through many revisions since their original design of diamond drops in 1918. As per the author of Queen’s Diamonds, Hugh Roberts, “Mrs. Greville ordered a pair of fancy-cut brilliant drop earrings in December 1918. In 1922 Cartier provided six marquise and six baton brilliants to extend the length of the earrings. Then in 1929 Cartier again added ten assored diamonds and the earrings in the present form were formed”.
In June 1923, The Princess of Wales attended the Jordan weddign banquet wearing the earrings with Jenny Packham Georgia Gown and Queen Mary’s Lover’s Knot Tiara.
