SATIIM, an organization in Belize, teaches Maya women sewing and embroidery skills to produce the stunning designs for Xe’il. The motif on the clutch bag is called “Le tutz’ etel top’ meaning the cohune leaf and flower. The cohune tree is a very important tree for humans and animals because its leaves are used for shelter; its palm heart is important to the Maya diet; animals eat the nuts; the cohune oil is a high-grade oil used in Belizean cooking and its bark is used for firewood. The motifs are enduring symbols of the Mopan connection with the past but also are living symbols of our relationship with the natural world.
