The Princess of Asturias Foundation was established on September 24, 1980, in Oviedo in an act presided over by the then Prince Felipe, who was accompanied by King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia. Its main objectives are to consolidate the existing links between the Principality and the Princess of Asturias and to contribute to the exaltation and promotion of all scientific, cultural and humanistic values that are universal heritage. After the proclamation of Prince Felipe as King of Spain on June 19, 2014, Felipe and Letizia’s elder daughter Leonor -the Princess of Asturias, holds the Presidency of Honor, while the vice president of honour is occupied by the President of the Principality of Asturias.

The Board of the Princess of Asturias Foundation, which is composed of a score of personalities, is responsible for establishing the activities to be developed, approve budgets, set performance criteria, etc. for the foundation. In addition, the institution has a board of an advisory and honorary nature, the Princess of Asturias Board of Trustees, which includes all those people or institutions that collaborate in one way or another with the objectives of the foundation. Finally, there are also the Protective Members of the entity, most of them closely linked to the Principality of Asturias, and who also contribute to the economic sustainability of the Foundation.

Each year, since 1981, the institution distinguishes with its awards the scientific, technical, cultural, social and human work carried out by people, work teams or institutions in the international field, in the following eight categories: Communication and Humanities, Social Sciences, Arts, Letters, Scientific and Technical Research, International Cooperation, Concord and Sports. As a totally private and non-profit organization, the institution is nourished by the income from its patrimony and from the grants and donations that each year contribute, both the members of its patronages, as well as persons or organizations that collaborate regularly or circumstantially with it.

Addressing the meeting Felipe welcomed the new patrons and said,” as you can understand, for the Queen and for me the foundation has a very special meaning -especially emotional”.
