Queen Letizia Visited Navarra to Open School Academic Year

Queen Letizia of Spain visited the towns of Milagro and San Adrián in Navarra to officially open the school year at the Infant, Primary, Secondary and Baccalaureate levels. Every year in September, Queen visited one town in the country to open the academic year.

This year, Queen Letizia visited the CPEIP “Nuestra Señora del Patrocinio”, in Milagro, and the IES “Ega”, in San Adrián. Queen’s visit came with all the governmental precautions – everyone was wearing a face mask, multiple entry points were used to keep the crowd minimum, marked routes within the centres and limited spaces in the courtyards.

The day began at the CPEIP “Nuestra Señora del Patrocinio”, in Milagro, a centre that fulfils all the educational demand from the lower levels of the town. The director of the centre, Mª Carmen Pérez Garde, acted as hostess and showed the Queen the facilities and hygiene measures adopted by the school.

Letizia shared a few minutes of the recess with the students of the centre, watching the games in which they participated in the different spaces set up for each class. In a courtyard divided into sections, she greeted some Kindergarten and Primary students.

Inside the school, the Queen went to a nursery classroom of class 3rd, where she learnt about the methodology school carry out to teach classes and maintain security measures with 5-year-old boys and girls.

Next,  Letizia visited the town of San Adrián, where she toured the facilities of the IES “Ega”, a reference centre for students not only from the municipality but also from Andosilla, Cárcar and Azagra.

The director of the IES, David Herreros, and the deputy director, Isabel Mendaza, guided Doña Letizia through the institute, the only centre in Navarra that brings together the entire educational section from Secondary onwards: ESO, Bachelor, Middle and Higher Degree FP, education for adults, special curriculum units, classrooms for attention to diversity and classrooms for the transition to adult life.

The school holds 735 students, of which 410 are in ESO and another 95 are Bachelor. The institute, in addition to being a reference center for these four towns, is also a frontier center, since it is located just five kilometers from La Rioja, which makes it receive students from both autonomous communities.

Letizia toured part of the facilities, made up of a building dedicated to ESO, built in 1996, and another for post-compulsory education, from 1999. It was not until 2013 when the two joined. In addition, to teach FP classes, the center has a 900-square-meter manufacturing facility, workshops, laboratories and a cellar with an oenology shop.

Queen Letizia met with the 1st year high school students who are using centre auditorium as classroom to maintain the social distance. An ex-journalist, Queen Letizia was very inerested in the lecture going on about Communication, media and advertising. Next, Letizia visited the classroom of special need children.

The Queen was able to tour the organization of secondary school recess and Physical Education classes, in the courtyard and on the fronton. Before leaving, Queen Letizia attended a breif meeting with the educational community in the center’s library, to find out how the adaptation has been going on, what the biggest challenges have been and the main problems that have had to be solved in order for the course to start with relative normality amid COVID-19.

For the day, as we expect from Queen Letizia during these visits, the style selection was minimal. Queen Letizia wore her grey Zara plaid top that she first wore in October 2018 to meet Martin Scorsese ahead of Princess of Asturias awards.
