Spanish Queen Letizia presided over the meeting of Foundation for Urgent Spanish “FundéuRAE” at the Royal Spanish Academy in Madrid. The foundation is made up of academics and prestigious linguists, journalists, and experts in other areas and works to promote the proper use of Spanish in the media. Queen Letizia is the Honorary President of the Foundation since January 2021.

The Urgent Spanish Foundation is a non-profit organization promoted by the Royal Spanish Academy and the EFE Agency and whose main objective is to promote the proper use of Spanish in the media. This initiative was born in 2005, the result of an agreement between the Efe Agency and the BBVA bank, with the advice of the Royal Spanish Academy, whose main objective is to promote the proper use of Spanish in the media. Its team of journalists, linguists, lexicographers, orthotypegraphers, proofreaders, and translators offers daily recommendations and answers to the queries they receive, in order to be a tool that helps all those who use the language in their daily work. The RAE and the EFE Agency constitute the Board of Trustees of “FundéuRAE”.

The agenda of the meeting was various matters related to language and the media, as well as specialized languages and their uses in the journalistic field. An ex-journalist, Queen Letizia learned about the current situation of the foundation, constituted by the RAE and the EFE Agency, as well as the projects and works in development that the foundation plans to carry out in 2021.

The meeting also discussed the new edition of the Language and Journalism Congress which will take place after the summer in San Millán de la Cogolla, in collaboration with the homonymous foundation. The role of the FundéuRAE as a tool to support journalists in a changing environment and the perspectives that the foundation offers in the face of the new linguistic codes of journalism were also discussed and reflected on how to offer a linguistic framework that favors the understanding of these new ones.
At this meeting, Doña Letizia spoke with the FundéuRAE technical team, made up of professional linguists who daily answer almost two hundred questions raised by journalists and media workers about the correct use of the Spanish language, and who prepare tips and keys of writing.
