King Felipe and Queen Letizia of Spain attended the first-ever Spanish stage version of ‘Parténope’ by Georg Friedrich Händel at the Royal Theatre in Madrid. The three-act opera is co-produced by English National Opera, San Francisco Opera, and Opera Australia with Musica by Ivor Bolton, and Stage by Christopher Alden.
The mix between serious and comic opera, the three-act performance is based on a story of 1920s Paris in which a woman is tangled between love and revenge. Rejected by the manager of the Royal Academy of Music for judging her libretto as a product of the “depravity of the taste of the Italian public”, Parténope nevertheless achieved a commercial success that endorsed her replacement seven years later on the same stage.
