The Princess of Wales, Catherine, was at the Landau Forte College Derby to celebrate Captain Preet Chandi MBE’s successful unsupported Antarctica expedition. The Princess of Wales became the patron of ‘Woman’s Solo Trek Across Antarctica’ in October 2022. The British army officer and physiotherapist, Preet Chandi, is the first woman of colour to complete the first-ever ‘Woman’s Solo Trek Across Antarctica’ -a 1,000-mile journey.

Captain Preet Chandi completed 922 miles in 70 days and 16 hours, skiing for 13-15 hours a day with only 5 hours of sleep. During the expedition, Preet was pulling her kit and supplies on a sledge that weighed around 120 KG. The usual temperature throughout the journey remained -30c with a wind blowing at the speed of 60mph.

Captain began this expedition with a mission to encourage young women to believe in themselves and to raise awareness about the importance of being outdoors. The Princess of Wales has been championing the positive impact of being outdoors on mental health for a long time. Today’s joint visit to Landau Derby is part of Captain Chandi’s nationwide school visits to share her inspiring story with school children.
During the visit, The Princess of Wales and Captain Preet Chandi presented an award to Simran Soggi who won the Preet’s National School logo competition. Both Catherine and Preet met with Year 11 and 13 students to talk about the expedition, Preet’s journey, her training and the food she consumed during the training and expedition. The Princess of Wales tried her hand at various activities with school children.
