The Princess of Wales, Catherine, visited the Irish Guards in Salisbury as the new Colonel of the Irish Guards. Catherine visited the 1st Battalion to learn about the work guards carried out on the Salisbury Plain Training Area. The Princess of Wales became the Colonel of the Irish Guards in December 2022. Catherine took the role from her husband, Prince William, who was the Colonel of the Irish Guards since May 2011.
During the visit, Catherine met with the Guardsmen of Number one and Number Two companies who have been recently deployed on Security Force Assistance tasks across East Africa in which they train and assist foreign forces and park rangers on counter-poaching.
Next, The Princess of Wales joined the Number Three Company to observe a medical training and casualty exercise which included counter-Explosive ordnance, and de-mining training which the Irish Guards are also providing to Ukrainian forces. Catherine participated in battlefield casualty drills that shows how injured soldiers are taken care of during the battles. The visit concluded with a demonstration of weapon systems used by the Irish guards.
From People’s report,
Kate began her visit to the training area in Salisbury Plain by meeting the Irish Guards of Number One and Number Two Company to hear about their recent deployment on Security Force Assistance tasks across East Africa. There, they have been training and helping other forces including aiding park rangers on counter-poaching missions.
About the Irish Guards, the Ministry of Defense says, “Though harsh winds blew across the Plain, stinging faces and fingers with cold, nothing could lessen the pleasure and enthusiasm of the Irish Guardsmen as they showed The Princess what they have been doing recently on operational duties across the world. The Irish Guards are known for their charm and bright humour and smiles soon wreathed every face.”
Irish Guards have always been closely linked to The Prince and Princess of Wales. William wore the Irish Guards’ uniform to their marriage in April 2011. Every year, we saw William and Catherine attending St. Patrick’s day parade in March. This year would be Catherine’s first St. Patrick’s day parade as the new Colonel.
