King Felipe and Queen Letizia of Spain undertook their last Madrid-based engagement before the annual Summer Palma schedule. The Royal couple was at the Royal Palace of Madrid to open the Royal Collection Gallery – a long-term project just completed by the National Heritage Institute. The National Heritage is responsible for managing the Crown Estate.
The Collection gallery is a museum where various Royal Collection artefacts will be on display for the members of the public. The project actually dates back to 1935 but it was interrupted by the 1936 Civil War. Since then it remained unnoticed until 1988 when the proposal was brought to the limelight once again.
The building was designed by Emilio Tuñón Álvarez and Luis Moreno Mansilla. The construction began in 2006 and finished in 2015. The Royal couple toured the building and learned about various objects on display. They were joined by the outgoing Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez for the day.
King Felipe VI will be heading to Palma on Wednesday where he has engagements scheduled on Thursday. Queen Letizia, Princess Leonor and Infanta Sofia will join him later this week before Letizia’s appearance at the annual Mallorca Film Festival on Sunday.
