King Felipe and Queen Letizia of Spain attended the 40th anniversary of the Flag Oath of the XLIV Promotion of the General Military Academy in Zaragoza. Princess Leonor of Spain is currently a student of the Academy and was participating in the traditional parade marking the event.
The event began with military honors and salutes and the King reviewed the troops. The oldest officer of the XLIV Promotion, Francisco Javier Marcos Izquierdo, currently chief lieutenant general of the UME, addressed a few words and presented a commemorative plaque to the director of the Academy, General Manuel Pérez López.
Next a tribute was paid to the Spanish army personnel who gave their lives for the country.
Every Military personnel takes the flag oath at the beginning of their army career and renews the oath in their 25th and 50th year. The Military Career Law of Spain establishes that “ every soldier has the duty to take an oath or promise to defend Spain before the Flag.”
King Felipe took his first oath in 1985 then renewed it in 2009. Princess Leonor took her first Flag oath last year.
