Today Queen Letizia travelled to San Millán de la Cogolla to preside over the inauguration of the XIII International Seminar on Language and Journalism at the Monastery of Yuso.
The International Seminar on Language and Media has the theme “Language in the era of post-truth” in which experts from several countries participated to address the issues from various fields of life such as social, psychological, philosophical, linguistic, journalistic and communication in general.
The seminar is organized by the San Millán de la Cogolla Foundation and the BBVA Fund, promoted by the EFE and BBVA Agency since 2006 and is endorsed by the Royal Spanish Academy. It serves an annual meeting that brings together prestigious journalists and experts in the language to debate and combine knowledge on journalism and Spanish language issues.
The Queen was received by the dignitaries of the committee and was welcomed by the children attendees.
As a novelty in this thirteenth edition, Letizia held a meeting with attendees to exchange views on the central axis of the seminar, in which the journalist Soledad Gallego-Díaz delivered the inaugural lecture. “Language as a weapon of manipulation”, “the language of emotions” and “false news” were the three parts in which the seminar was divided.
The participants of the seminar analyzed the multiple slopes of the phenomenon of the “posverdad” in a stage of disinformation, in which false or falsified information sneaks, something that worries the world-wide authorities and that influences the decisions of the citizen. The false news and the role played by the Trump administration in the electoral victory of the current president of the United States, is another of the topics discussed in the seminar by the Mexican journalist and writer Esteban Illades; while Spanish psychotherapist and communicator Luis Muiño referred to the language as a weapon of manipulation.
