Princess Diana’s Sapphire and Diamond Earrings
Description
The Duchess of Cambridge wore Princess Diana’s Cabochons sapphire and Diamond Earrings at the Trooping the Colour Parade in June 2022.
The earrings feature two Cabochons Sapphire drops surrounded by Diamonds. The top sapphire is surrounded by 8 diamonds while the bottom one has 9 around it with a single diamond joining both clusters.
There are many reports circulating around that the earrings belonged to Princess Diana’s Suite of Sapphire and Diamond which was her wedding gift from The Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia that included a Burmese sapphire and diamond pendant with matching earrings, a ring, bracelet, and a watch. But I do not believe it is. Lady Diana loved Sapphires and she has many sapphire pieces.
Above is the Saudi Suite which shows two single sapphire earrings in it. The author of The Queen’s Jewels, Leslie Field described the Saudi set as, “Made by Asprey, it consists of an enormous Burmese sapphire pendant set in a jagged sunray fringe of baguette diamonds and hung on a thin diamond necklace; a matching pair of earrings and ring; a two-row bracelet of brilliant-cut diamonds with a smaller version of the sapphire pendant as a centrepiece; and a wristwatch, the face set in the same diamond sunray fringe and the strap consisting of seven oval sapphires set in clusters of diamonds“. The set is surrounded by baguette-cut diamonds.
Diana used to mix and match her jewels. Here is Princess Diana wearing the two cluster sapphire and diamond earrings during her Australia tour with her sapphire pendant.
For many years it was believed that The Duchess has this pair dismantled and turned into a single sapphire earring but last year it was concluded by The Court Jeweller that it is not.
