On the day 2 of her cooperation visit to Mozambique, Queen Letizia of Spain travelled from Maputo to Beira to see the devastation caused by the Cyclone “Idai”, where upon arrival at the airport of the city she was received by the Governor of Sofala, Alberto Ricardo Mondlane, among other local authorities.

The day started with an informative meeting in the meeting room of the airport where she was informed about the situation after the catastrophe caused by the Cyclone “Idai” in March this year.

Later, Letizia accompanied by the governor of the province of Sofala and the Mozambican Minister of Health moved to Dondo, centre-east of Mozambique, where she visited the START Hospital.

Known as the “red vests”, the START device is composed of a field hospital with surgical capacity and hospitalization with a team of 71 people including the members of the Emergency and Immediate Response Unit of the Community of Madrid (ERICAM), Firefighters of Madrid City Council and of the Community of Madrid, and SUMMA staff, and the Zaporeak- a pharmaceutical technician of Farmamundi and Doctors from the World for psychosocial support, in addition to personnel of the AECID.

Health and logistics from Andalusia, Aragon, Balearic Islands, Canary Islands, Castilla La Mancha, Castilla y León, Catalonia, Ceuta, Extremadura, Galicia, La Rioja, Madrid, Murcia, the Basque Country and the Valencian Community, as well as AECID staff , integrate the Spanish humanitarian response team that serves the most affected people in the province of Sofala.

Spain put together this team after a help request from the Mozambican government through the European Civil Protection Mechanism. The Agency follows the evolution of this emergency from the first moment through the Embassy of Spain in Maputo and its Technical Cooperation Office and the Office of Humanitarian Action in Madrid. The staff of the Agency in the country serves in the affected area and is in permanent contact with the Mozambican authorities and international organizations deployed to facilitate the assistance to the population.

During the visit, Queen Letizia toured the areas of emergency, radiology, the ultrasound, the operating room and the Resuscitation and hospitalization areas.

After the visit, the Queen held a brief meeting with the staff of AECID on the deployment, activities and lessons learned from the START Team.

After the visit to the START Hospital,  Letizia travelled back to the Beira airport, where after a meeting with the coordinators of the operation of international humanitarian assistance and Spanish members of humanitarian action deployed in the area, she returned back to Spain.

The President and First Lady offered lunch in the honour of Spanish Queen at at the Palace of Ponta Vermelha that was also attended by the delegates of the both countries.

During the meet, they discussed the reconstruction plans after the damages of the “Idai” and the international aid that may be required for this.

After lunch, Letizia travelled to the Technical Cooperation Office (OTC), where she toured its facilities and discovered a commemorative plaque to mark the visit.

She also held a meeting with the personnel from the Technical Cooperation Office, International Institutions, Religious Orders, representatives of NGOs, representatives of Decentralized Cooperation, personnel from the Ministry of Health, Consumption and Social Welfare and the Ministry of Health.
