The ASALE, founded in Mexico in 1951, has organized since its creation fifteen ordinary congresses scheduled every four years. Today’s plenary session took place at the institutional headquarters of the RAE, inaugurated on April 1, 1894, in an act chaired by the regent queen María Cristina, accompanied by her son Alfonso XIII, then still a minor. The land on which the building was built – a project of the architect Miguel Aguado de la Sierra – had been ceded by the Crown for that purpose.

The link between the Royal House and the Academy has been constant since its creation at the initiative of the Marquis of Villena, Juan Manuel Fernández Pacheco.  Felipe and Letizia also attended the inauguration of the VIII International Congress of the Spanish Language (Córdoba, Argentina), on March 27, 2019, during their Argentina visit.
