On Tuesday, Queen Letizia of Spain undertook the last official engagement of the year and decade. She visited the exhibition “The other Court – Women of the House of Austria in the Royal Monasteries of the Barefoot and the Incarnation” held at the Royal Palace in Madrid.

In Madrid, very close to each other, there are the two Royal Monasteries, the Monastery of the Royal Barefoot, built in the 16th century and inhabited by Franciscan nuns, and the Monastery of the Incarnation, built in the 17th century and inhabited by nuns Augustinians.

This exhibition includes portraits of women from the House of Austria in these monasteries, combining palatial and religious aspects.

The Royal Palace welcomed the project that shows the way in which the palatial and religious aspects are united within the international courtly context characteristic of the House of Austria and especially, the strong relations with the Austrian Empire, in the 16th and 17th centuries.

In the Monastery of the Barefoot, the first Cortes of Madrid were held in 1339. Carlos I and Isabel of Portugal also resided there. In addition, Joan of Austria was born here, founder of the Monastery of the Royal Barefoot in the year 1559, and, also lived Maria of Austria, whose remains are in the choir of the church.

Queen Margarita was the driving force behind the creation of Monastery of the Incarnation after getting the Augustinian nuns of Valladolid to move to Madrid. However, the inauguration of the monastery took place 5 years after the death of the Queen and that is why it was inaugurated with a party in honour of the Queen.

We do not have any other engagement schedule for Queen Letizia in 2019. I believe we will see the Spanish Queen in New Year and new decade now. Most probably the Queen will start the royal duties at the Military Eastern in the first week of January.
