Her Majesty The Queen has appointed The Duchess of Cambridge the sponsor of Royal Navy’s HMS Glasgow, Prince William revealed during a visit to BAE Systems Shipyard in Govan this morning. Today, The Duke of Cambridge was viewing the construction work on the HMS Glasgow.
Speaking to the staff after the tour of the facilities, The Earl of Strathearn revealed,
Today, I’m very pleased to announce that my family’s connection with Type 26 will endure for many years to come. Her Majesty The Queen has approved the appointment of my wife, Catherine, as Sponsor of the superb ship we see taking shape outside – HMS Glasgow. I know that Catherine will be delighted to join you here in Glasgow for the naming ceremony in due course.
Catherine and I feel extremely privileged to become part of Type 26 team and we look forward to following the journey of the ship and the future crews in the years to come!
Sponsoring a ship is a long-standing tradition in the Royal Navy and other recent sponsors of Royal Navy ships include The Queen, who is Sponsor of the HMS Queen Elizabeth, and The Duchess of Cornwall – the Sponsor of the HMS Prince of Wales. A sponsor is chosen to have a strong and enduring personal connection to the vessel and her crew, often supporting milestones, events and deployments involving the ship.
Kensington Palace said, “As the warship’s sponsor, the Duchess of Cambridge will attend the naming ceremony of the HMS Glasgow when it is ready to hit the waters in the mid-2020s and will also take part in milestones relating to the ship throughout its service, both for the vessel itself and for the crew aboard.”
HMS Glasgow is the first Type 26 frigate to be built for the United Kingdom’s Royal Navy. The Type 26 class will partially replace the navy’s thirteen Type 23 frigates and will be a multi-mission warship designed to support anti-submarine warfare, air defence and general-purpose operations. The vassal has the capacity to carry up to 157 personnel, travel over 7,000 nautical miles, and hit speeds of up to 26 knots.
In 2013 The Duchess of Cambridge became Godmother of a 3,600 passenger vessel from the Princess Cruises fleet officially named the ‘Royal Princess’. In February 2011, The Duchess joined Prince William at the christening of a lifeboat in Trearddur, Anglesey.
Prince William, who is titled The Earl of Strathearn in Scotland, joined Her Majesty for the first day of Royal Week Scotland Yesterday.
Kensington Palace announced today in Court Circular that The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will attend the Euro 2020 Football match between England and Germany at the Wembley Stadium.
The Duke of Cambridge will also take the Duchess of Cambridge and their three children Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis to view Lady Diana’s new statue at the Sunken Garden of Kensington Palace privately. The statue will be officially unveiled by Prince William and Prince Harry this Thursday that would have been their Mother’s 60th birthday.
