Queen Letizia of Spain presented the 21st Edition of the “Ciudad de Tudela‘ Ópera Prima ’Film Festival” at Moncayo Cinema in Tudela, Navarra. The Tudela Opera Prima Film Festival is a competition specializing in the first national feature films, which is held between Friday 22nd and Saturday 30th October.
Upon her arrival at the Moncayo Cinema, Doña Letizia was received by the president of the Foral Community of Navarra, María Victoria Chivite; the Government delegate in the Foral Community of Navarra, José Luis Arast and the mayor of Tudela, Alejandro Toquero.
Prior to the screening of the film “That Happy Couple” by Luis García Berlanga, The Queen presented the Prize-tribute to Don Fernando Fernán-Gómez to his son, Fernando Fernán-Gómez; the Prize-tribute to Don Juan Antonio Bardem to his daughter, María Bardem, and the Prize-tribute to Don Luis García Berlanga to his grandson, Jorge García Berlanga.
At the end of the film, Doña Letizia had a brief meeting with the families of the honorees, the organizers of the Festival, and the members of the jury. Luis Garcia Berlanga was born in Valencia in 1921. In 1947 he joined the Institute of Cinematographic Research and Experiences of Madrid (IIEC). In Karlovy Vary, he was awarded as one of the ten most relevant filmmakers in the world. He died in Madrid in 2010.
Juan Antonio Bardem, born in Madrid in 1922, studied at the IIEC. He began his career with Luis García Berlanga, co-directing “That Happy Couple” and, later, participating in the script for “Welcome, Mr. Marshall!”. He died in Madrid in 2002.
Fernando Fernan Gomez was born in Lima (Peru) in 1921. In 1938 he began as an actor in the Laura Pinillos company; five years later, he made his film debut with “Cristina Guzmán”, by Gonzalo Delgrás. He was one of the great Spanish figures on the stage and on celluloid. He starred in almost 200 films under the orders of the best directors, such as Neville, Erice, Berlanga, Trueba, or Almodóvar. He died in Madrid in 2007.
The Opera Prima Ciudad de Tudela Film Festival is the only Spanish competition specialized in the debut works of filmmakers and has the objective of disseminating and appreciating, in addition to awarding, this type of works that, in some cases, do not have resources or means to make themselves known. It is also a way to promote new film careers and gain recognition. The director of the Festival is the film director, presenter, writer, and teacher Luis Alegre, also director of the Tudela Film Festival and collaborator of the Malaga Spanish Film Festival.
