Queen Letizia met with the Executive Director of UNICEF, Catherine Russell at the UNICEF Headquarters in New York. On the trip to New York, Letizia was joined by the Executive Director of UNICEF Spain and the Global Director of Communication of UNICEF Spain.
The Secretary of the UN General Council has called the world leaders to put Education and Children’s well-being on the top of their agenda and this week various events are being organised to ensure that world leaders are putting the required initiatives to ensure the children around the globe are receiving better care in schools and communities.
After meeting with the UNICEF director, Letizia headed for an event “Promoting and protecting the mental health and psychosocial well-being of students in schools and learning environments” organised by UNICEF, UNESCO and WHO jointly. The event called for urgent global action to ensure that every child enjoys their right to education in a learning environment that promotes well-being and good mental health.
Speaking at the event, Queen Letizia said, “a multidisciplinary approach and specialised resources are essential to address the complexity of this matter. We are all aware of the stigma surrounding poor mental health and the misunderstanding, or even rejection, that it causes. That we are here today is the reflection that the collective effort to overcome these obstacles has been launched”.
The 50-years old Spanish Queen pledged that she will continue to work in the field and with organisations to drive priority action and strengthening of mental health programs around the world. The event was attended by youth leaders and members of governments from different countries.
After the event, the Spanish Queen headed for the FAO headquarters where she met with the Director-General of the FAO, Qu Dongyu, who was also visiting the city. Queen Letizia has been the Special Ambassador of the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations since 2015.
