Catherine, The Princess of Wales, was out and about in London to undertake a couple of engagements as part of the Early Years Campaign – ‘Shaping Us’. The Princess of Wales launched this early-years campaign in February this year to raise awareness about the importance of the first five years of a child’s life.
The first stop of the day was the Foundling Museum – patronage of The Princess of Wales. The visit was to highlight the importance of nurturing relationships throughout early childhood and beyond, including that outside of traditional Parent and child settings. The visit was focused on how a relationship is nurtured by grandparents, aunts or uncles when the children cannot stay with their parents.
In an engagement that was embargoed until she arrived, the Princess of Wales is now at the charity Kinship in St Pancras, central London, where she is meeting kinship carers – people who raise the children of close friends or relatives – and children they are bringing up. pic.twitter.com/pq7xU8fuHa

Catherine met with those who received support from kinship carers – people who are extended families taking care of others. She met with those who are being supported by the Museum to discuss the life-long time impacts that positive and supportive relationships can have on children and young people.
The next stop of the day was Kinship where she met with the kinship carers themselves. About the engagement Kensington Palace said, “There are 162,000 children being raised in Kinship care in England and Wales, many of whom have experienced trauma in their earlier years and who benefit from family members and friends being able to step in and care for them. Kinship carers face unique challenges when taking on the responsibility of raising a child, often welcoming children into their homes with very little notice and managing the emotional impact of whatever has occurred to the child’s birth parents.“
Kinship supports more than 10000 kinship carers across England and Wales and provides them with free training sessions, peer support groups, one-to-one support, an expert advice line, and online information and support hub.
