Queen Letizia of Spain presided over the act commemorating the “World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day” at the Circle of Fine Arts in Madrid. It was Queen Letizia’s first official engagement since 16th May. We saw her in Wales at Princess Leonor’s graduation and then at Infanta Sofia’s confirmation last week.
The lack of public engagement is due to the General elections in Spain. During this period, The Spanish Royal Family usually keeps an extremely low profile as required being a Constitutional Monarchy.
World Red Cross Day and Red Crescent Day is an annual celebration of the World Red Cross and Red Crescent. The day is celebrated on the birth anniversary of Henry Dunant – the founder of the (ICRC) International Committee of the Red Cross and the recipient of the first Nobel Peace Prize in 1901. Henry was born on May 08th 1828 in Switzerland.
Red Cross represents the largest humanitarian, civic and independent movement in the world. It has been collaborating with public and private entities for 159 years
The annual event began with the projection of a video “We do from the Heart” – the theme of the 2023 “World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day” celebrations. then another video was presented during the event “A Million Little Stories”. The event is a permanent fixture of Queen Letizia’s summer agenda.
Queen Letizia presented the Spanish Red Cross medals to the Ukrainian Red Cross, the Spanish Society of Geriatrics and Gerontology, the IRB Cancer Research Team, the Forest Fire Reinforcement Brigades and Ethic magazine. In Spain, the Red Cross has more than 263,000 volunteers responding in more than 6,500 municipalities.
Beginning her speech in Ukrainian as a symbol of solidarity with the war-torn country, Queen Letizia said, “The long history of a movement that has evolved together with those who it serves, supports, helps and protects. Any person in a situation of vulnerability, illness, violence, inequality, risk of exclusion, need, discrimination, or loneliness has an answer at the Red Cross, a friendly voice and an outstretched hand… And that is why today we present the medals that reward five organizations that share these values and that, as we have just seen, reflect the excellence of those who are guided by responsibility, commitment and the desire for more justice“.
The event concluded with a performance by white voices of ‘Los chicos del choir’.
