King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia of Spain has resumed their Royal duties and today the Royal couple was in Pamplona where they attended the celebrations marking the VI Centenary of the Privilege of the Union. The Privilege of the Union is the treaty by which the three main boroughs that formed the city of Pamplona in the Middle Ages were united by means of a document signed on September 8, 1423 by King Carlos III of Navarre “the Noble”. Until that day each town had had its own flag and alderman.
King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia‘s first point of arrival was the Cathedral of Santa María where they were received by the president of the Foral Community of Navarra and Government officials.
The Privilege of the Union was printed by agreement of the Royal Council of Navarre on December 17, 1618, there were two hundred copies which were distributed to the authorities and those who lent money to the city coffers to support the union.
Every year in September, a week long celebrations start to mark the union and end on September 08. Pamplona celebrates the Privilege of the Union with a schedule of activities that includes various musical and artistic events, the traditional medieval market and guided tours of the Town Hall. A parade is held in the city that concludes with a service of Thanksgiving to King Carlos III at the Cathedral of Santa María followed by a Tres Burgos medieval market at the Historic Center of Pamplona.
The Royal couple first attended the service at the chapel conducted by the Archbishop of Pamplona and Tudela. After the service, The King and Queen toured the museum of of King Carlos III the Noble, while the anthem of the Foral Community of Navarra was interpreted along with the National Anthem. Their Majesties made a floral tribute at the foot of the mausoleum and then signed the book of honor of the Cathedral. The couple also saw the original treaty document at once of the exhibition.
Then King Felipe and Queen Letizia visited the street market where 120 stalls were organized by the locals.
Next the couple toured the Town Hall and viewed various exhibitions being organized to mark the event. The King and Queen were presented with the seal of the Privilege of the Union.
