King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia of Spain attended the event commemorating the Spanish Team’s participation in Olympic Games of Barcelona 92 and Albertville 92, at the Spanish Olympic Committee in Madrid.
These games were the second and last two consecutive Olympic games to be held in Western Europe after the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville, France, held five months earlier. The 1992 Summer Games were the first since the end of the Cold War, and the first unaffected by boycotts since the 1972 Summer Games.
Joining the Royal couple at the event were various athletes who participated in those games and many more authorities who were responsible for the organization of the games in 1992.
Addressing the gathering, King Felipe said, “Today, at the house of Spanish Olympism, celebrating the successes of Barcelona, I want to congratulate the COE for its work in support of sport and athletes, and in the constant defence of the ideals of the Olympic Movement. As I commented on one occasion, we did not win a medal, but something more valuable: the human values on which the Games are based and which unite people from all over the world.”
