King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia of Spain presented the Prize for Literature in Spanish Language “Miguel de Cervantes” 2023 to the Spanish writer Luis Mateo Díez, one of the great narrators of the Spanish language, heir to the Cervantino spirit, writer in front of all adversity, creator of imaginary worlds and territories.
For the event, The Royal couple travelled to University of Alcalá. Alcalá de Henares. Awarded by the Ministry of Culture, the annual award is endowed with 125,000 euros. Upon, arrival, King Felipe and Queen Letizia were received with the military ceremonial welcome. King Felipe inspected the troops and received the cane of command of the city from the mayor of Alcalá de Henares, Judith Piquet.
The award jury was chaired by Santiago Muñoz Machado, representative of the Royal Spanish Academy. María José Gálvez, Director General of the Book, Comic and Reading of the Ministry of Culture and Sport has acted as vice president.
Luis Mateo Díez (Lon, 1942) is one of the most prolific writers on the Spanish literary scene. In addition to his two poetic books, he has a narrative, autobiographical and essayist work that has been the subject of important narrative awards. Twice Criticism and National Narrative Prize Award, Francisco Umbral Prize and Café Gijón Prize, among others. In 2020 he was awarded the National Prize for Spanish Letters.
