The brooch was a wedding gift to Princess Maria de las Mercedes on her wedding to Infante Juan, Count of Barcelona in 1935. Hence the name Countess of Barcelona Pearl Brooch. The countess was the grandmother of Letizia’s husband, King Felipe VI.

Made of a large central pale grey pearl the brooch is surrounded by a diamond cluster. A detachable pear-shaped pearl is suspended from the brooch through a single round diamond and diamond cap.

Just like many other royal jewels, the brooch can be worn as a pendant too. In the 1980s, the brooch was passed to her daughter-in-law, Queen Sofia of Spain. Sofia wore the brooch very often, especially at semi-state or formal events with and without the detachable pendant.

Since then Letizia has not brought the brooch back but given how Queen Letizia keeps on surprising when it comes to jewels and her style, I believe it will make another appearance sometime soon in the future.
