Today the Spanish King and Queen, Felipe and Letizia, were in Salmanca for a day undertaking engagements. They visited Pulsed Lasers Center to inaugurate Laser techinique Vega-3 and then University of Salmanca to celebrate the celebration of the 30th anniversary of the signing of the “Magna Charta Universitatum”.
Felipe and Letizia arrived at Pulsed Lasers Center in Villamayor in the morning and were received by the President of the center and other dignitaries.
The royal couple along with science minister of the country conducted a board meeting with members of the center. A formal presentation of the new laser technology developed by the center “Vega -3” was presented in the meeting.
Felipe and Letizia toured the center and received a briefing about various scientific projects going on in the center.
Finally King Felipe put the new technology “Vega-3” into operation by pressing the start button. The Vega-3 is the first ever Spanish Laser technology that reaches the limit of petawatt.
The VEGA system is possible to reach intensities in the range of 1019 Wcm-2, which is much higher than the atomic intensity unit (3.5 1016 Wcm-2). Therefore, experiments are being designed in different fields related to proton acceleration. The advantages of all this power that reach the arms of VEGA not only involve the possibility of obtaining very small foci, but also the possibility of having large areas of interaction.
Then the couple received the explanation of the project in detail from the development team about its working and impact.
