Felipe and Letizia attended a session of the scientific committee of the Elcano Royal Institute, dedicated to analyzing the international impact of the pandemic.

The meeting was attended by the international experts and the situation caused by the world health crisis in Europe and also in Asia, Africa and America were analyzed. The Scientific Council is the advisory body of the Royal Elcano Institute, made up of prominent Spanish and foreign personalities, with proven knowledge of international relations.

The Council, which meets in person once a year, was convened for the month of May but has had to be postponed until autumn due to the health crisis. The Real Instituto Elcano is the “think-tank” of international and strategic studies, carried out from a Spanish, European and global perspective.

Its objective is to promote in society the knowledge of the international reality and the foreign relations of Spain, as well as to serve as a focus of thought and generation of ideas that are useful for decision-making by political decision-makers, leaders of private companies and public institutions, social and academic agents.

Created in 2001 as a private foundation, the organizational structure of the Elcano Royal Institute balances public and private interests and favours the exchange of ideas in a plural and independent environment, accommodating diverse political and social sensibilities. The Royal Elcano Institute takes its name from Juan Sebastián Elcano, a Spanish sailor who led the first circumnavigation of the world, of which the V Centennial is now celebrated. The Foundation is governed by the Body of Trustees and King Felipe is the Honorary President of the foundation.
