Spanish Royals enjoyed a brief tour of the Museum. The Museum dates back to more than 175 years. It was established as a small collection of local character that, due to the importance of the Emeritense site, grew until it rose to the status of a national museum.

Its content and activities revolve around the Roman period, which is the focus of the permanent exhibition set up at its main headquarters. Despite this, the weight of the role of Mérida at the end of Antiquity, when it occupied the role of the first capital of Spain, as well as during the Visigothic period and the beginning of the Middle Ages, mark the future aspirations of the Museum, with the creation of a new headquarters to house the collections associated with these historical periods.
