Princess of Asturias, Leonor, and Infanta Sofía, participated in the act of the European Program #UnÁrbolporEuropa, co-organized by the Office of the European Parliament in Spain and the European Team association to raise awareness about the fight against climate change at Hayedo de Montejo.
Leonor and Sofia were joined by young European leaders and ambassadors between 14 and 16 years of age of 11 nationalities from different countries of the European Union and of the Schools for the day.
The Spanish Princess toured the Hayedo de Montejo and learnt more about the campaign ‘A Tree for Europe’. During the tour, two stops were made outside the interpretation centre and outside the Hayedo refuge, to receive explanations about panels.
The #UnArbolporEuropa campaign was born out of the initiative of the youth association Team Europe in August 2019. The President of the European Parliament, David Sassoli, asked mayors from all over Europe to plant at least one tree in their municipalities to help in the preservation of our planet.
Since then, and with the close collaboration of the Office of the European Parliament in Spain, the campaign has managed to get 610 Spanish municipalities to join, which have already planted more than 25,000 trees. In addition to the plantation, the municipalities that join the initiative are committed to making visible the importance of sustainable development at the local level and to involve young people in decision-making processes regarding local sustainability.
The visiting team was divided into groups of 6 to plant 5 beech trees and a yew. Princess of Asturias was part of the first group, and Infanta Doña Sofía was part of the second group, and each of the groups carried out the planting of a tree in the protected natural area of Hayedo de Montejo (Madrid).
The fight against climate change is one of the priorities of the European Union, which has been marked with the approval of the European Green Pact as one of the main milestones of this legislature, and in which the commitment of the Royal House coincides with environmental issues.
