After the XXIS Princess of Asturias awards, Spain’s royal family presented the Exemplary People of Asturias 2021 award to the town of Santa María del Puerto, Somiedo in Asturias.
This year’s award was presented to the town for “embodying the model of a mountain town that has known how to adapt to the new times”. The awards are presented to a town in the Principality of Asturias to a town, village, population center, space landscape that has stood out in a notable way in the defense and conservation of its natural, environmental environment, its historical, cultural, or artistic heritage, in initiatives of economic and social impulse or in the realization of communal works or other outstanding manifestations of solidarity.
This award was convened for the first time in 1990, on the Foundation’s tenth anniversary, and has a different nature and character from the Princess of Asturias Awards. Its financial endowment is twenty-five thousand euros.
The Royal family visited the town and met the locals. They were received with a very warm welcome by the public. The town is located on the border with León, at an altitude of 1,486 meters, which makes the living conditions of its inhabitants very harsh, especially in winter.
The Royals discovered a commemorative plaque to mark the day and toured the town. They learned about the life of the locals, Vaqueira traditions, and customs.
The tour of the Royal Family continued through the streets of the town to the stone fountain and trough, where a vaqueira song was performed by Mari Luz Cristóbal, an Asturian singer.
