Queen Letizia of Spain is undertaking 3-days long Cooperation visit to the Islamic Republic of Mauritania from May 31st to June 02. During her time in the Northwest African country, Letizia will be learning about the various projects being carried out by the Spanish Cooperation in the country in different fields. In Mauritania there are 12 Spanish NGOs present, working in the sectors of rural development and food security, health, and gender.
Upon arrival at the Nouakchott International Airport, Queen Letizia was received by the First Lady of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, Mariem Fadel Dah, whom she met earlier this year when Mariem made a visit to Spain with her husband. Letizia received a traditional welcome at the airport that include milk and dates from two young girls.
After greeting the Spanish ambassador to the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, Miriam Álvarez de la Rosa, and the ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania in Spain, Mr. Boubacar Kane, and other authorities, Letizia retired for the night. On Wednesday and Thursday, Queen will be attending various meetings and will be visiting different projects in Mauritania.
AECID has been working in Mauritania since 1995. In 1998, the Technical Cooperation Office was created. In 2014 the Country Partnership Framework was signed by the VII Joint Commission for Cooperation between Spain and Mauritania outlining the main lines of work that defined cooperation between the two countries. This is Letizia’s 7th Cooperation visit. In the past, Letizia visited Honduras and El Salvador in 2015, Senegal in 2017, Dominican Republic and Haiti in 2018, Mozambique in 2019, Honduras in 2020, and Paraguay in 2021. Before King Felipe’s accession to the throne, his mother, Queen Sofia used to undertake the Cooperation tours every year.
As expected, we won’t be seeing many fashion and style details during the tour. Letizia will be keeping her look minimal and working as she did on her arrival by wearing her Imiloa ‘Orchid’ shirt that she has worn during previous cooperation tours with her Mango jeans, small diamond studs and UFO brown boots. We will be seeing the red AECID vest throughout the tour.
