King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia of Spain presented the National Research Awards and the National Research Awards for Young People 2022 at the Mediterranean House in Alicante. The National Research Awards are the most important recognition in Spain in the field of scientific research and for the first time, the awards included National Research Awards for Young People.

The awards were established in 1982 and endowed with 30,000 Euros for each modality and distinguish those researchers in Spain who are carrying out outstanding professional work of international relevance in their respective research areas and fields scientists, who recognize the research trajectories that exceptionally contribute to the advancement of science, to a better knowledge of the human being and its coexistence, to the transfer of technology and to the progress of humanity.

The 2022 National Research Awards for Young People, was created to recognise the merit of researchers in Spain who have achieved relevant achievements in the early stages of their careers. These awards, endowed with 30,000 euros for each modality, are aimed at people with a maximum age of 40 years, who are carrying out relevant and internationally recognized work in a Spanish institution.

The event began with the projection of a video about the award followed by a round table. Addressing the gathering, King Felipe said, “recently, the Queen and I had the opportunity to be in Zaragoza, on the occasion of the National Culture Awards, and in Avilés, for the Innovation and Design Awards. On this occasion, for the excellence in scientific research. These last few weeks have undoubtedly served to show —and demonstrate— in our country, and also abroad, the magnificent potential and enormous talent of outstanding professionals in such different fields and, at the same time, so fundamental to our society. It is an honour to accompany you edition after edition and to know your work and trajectories. And it is a pride to know that we count on you at the forefront of our society.”

The awards were presented in 10 categories: Santiago Ramón y Cajal National Research Award, Leonardo Torres Quevedo National Award in the area of ​​engineering and architecture, Ramón Menéndez Pidal National Research Award in the area of ​​humanities, Gregorio Marañón National Research Award in the area of ​​medicine and health sciences, National Research Award Alejandro Malaspina in the area of ​​science and technology of natural resources, Blas Cabrera National Research Award in the area of ​​physical, materials and earth sciences, National Research Award Enrique Moles in the area of ​​chemical science and technology, Juan de la Cierva National Research Award in the area of ​​technology transfer, Julio Rey Pastor National Research Award in the area of ​​mathematics and information and communication technologies and Pascual Madoz National Research Award, in the area of ​​law and economic and social sciences.
